The Southwest District Kiwanis Foundation was organized in 1972 as a 501(c)3 nonprofit Corporation to serve as an "umbrella" over the clubs of the Southwest District as a means of supporting projects that no one club could finance or accomplish by itself. One of the first projects was the establishment of Kamp Kiwanis as a youth camp for handicapped children. The Kamp is currently being used and maintained by the Southwest Kiwanis Family.
The Foundation also provides a group coverage to almost three-fourths of the Kiwanis Clubs in the Southwest District for their 501(c)(3) charitable purposes through the Internal Revenue Service. Some Kiwanis Clubs have their own Foundations that were granted 501(c)(3) status by the IRS. Most Kiwanis Clubs in the Southwest District do not. They fall under the blanket coverage of the Southwest District Kiwanis Foundation, so long as they follow the IRS rules, file their tax returns as required each year and provide all documentation requested by the Southwest District Foundation.
