The Foundation provides support and funding to our kids and to other organizations that can benefit from a little Kiwanis help.  Here are some of the ongoing programs that we support and additional information about how to apply for them:

Vocational/Technical Scholarships

Types of career fields for which this program is intended include auto mechanics, nursing, computer technicians, massage therapists, medical technicians, etc.  Working in concert with high school guidance counselors, the Foundation currently awards several of these scholarships each year.

Joan Skinner Memorial Scholarship-  Late in 2012, Charlotte Manning of the Superstition Kiwanis Club of Mesa, AZ contacted the Foundation to inquire about funding a memorial scholarship in honor of her recently deceased mother.  She wanted to assist a high school Key Club member who was planning to pursue further education at a technical or trade school with a $1,000 scholarship. The foundation will be awarding this scholarship each year to a deserving high school student.

Kiwanis Across Borders
Kiwanis Across Borders is a way that the Foundation assists Kiwanians who have identified a need in another country.  If your know of a need or if your Kiwanis Club knows of a specific need in a foreign country, you should consider applying for these grants.  Previous recipients have assisted in constructing schools in Thailand, helping mothers in Mexico and doing other worthwhile projects in many countries around the world.

Student Recognition Program
The Student Recognition Program is designed to reward students in Southwest District Mid-Schools and High Schools for their self improvement.  Each month, or quarter, a student at the school will be chosen by a faculty committee as the "Most Improved" student and will be recognized.  An annual winner will also be selected.  An additional award for the full-year winner will be an engraved plaque. The criteria for selection should be based on Attitude, Behavior, School Involvement, and Civic Involvement.  Grades and Part-Time Employment should also be considered. The monthly Award includes a certificate, a "Kiwanis Student of the Month" bumper sticker, a meal and recognition at the sponsoring Kiwanis Club, and a Foundation pen.

The package of eight monthly certificates with the annual

plaque costs $80 per year.  Without the most improved

student of the year plaque, it is $50.  Checks should be

made out to the SWDK Foundation and sent to Jim

Sowers for annual renewals.
